Our hygge approach

Children sat beside a tent playing

A calmer way to learn

Therapeutic, child-centred support for neurodivergent children We specialise in supporting children who find mainstream education overwhelming, offering a calm, relational approach that prioritises wellbeing, regulation and trust.

Nurture through nature

Nature-based and sensory-informed environments Our spaces are thoughtfully designed to feel safe, cosy and grounding, blending indoor nurture with outdoor exploration and outdoor Hygge inspired learning.

Relationships first

Relationships before results We believe children learn best when they feel safe, understood and connected. Every child at Hugi is known deeply, supported gently, and celebrated for who they are.

What is alternative provision

Hugi provides specialist alternative provision placements for primary-aged children who are unable to access mainstream education full-time. We work with neurodivergent children including autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma and sensory differences.

Children attend Hugi on personalised, part-time timetables designed around their individual needs. Our therapeutic, relationship-based approach prioritises wellbeing, regulation and engagement, helping children rebuild confidence and re-engage with education.

Our spaces

We are not a school, we are an alternative provision that is different, very different.

We prioritise wellbeing and belonging!

Here primary aged children are met with warmth, patience and understanding.

Our spaces offer a range of thoughtfully designed environments so children can access the type of space that best supports their needs. From low-arousal 'nook' spaces for quiet reflection and decompression, to dynamic sensory zones where exploration is encouraged.

Nest

Children in an early years setting practising hygge

Hugi Nest offers a nature connected, therapeutic learning environment rather than a classroom model.
Our priority is to support children to become emotionally available for learning before academic engagement is expected.

Many children attending Nest have EHCP or ESP targets relating to:

  • interaction with others

  • shared attention

  • flexibility

  • emotional regulation

  • tolerance of adult direction

  • safety and belonging

Learning does not sit separately from the day it is embedded into the experience of being in a safe relational group. We reflect, analyse and evaluate as part of the continuous cycle to ensure high quality.

Hub

Two children playing in an alternative provision

Hugi Hub provides a structured therapeutic learning environment designed to support children to develop communication, attention and engagement skills.

Children may access targeted interventions and approaches including:

  • Sensology sessions to support sensory processing and shared engagement

  • Bucket Time (Attention Autism) to build shared attention and listening skills

  • Intensive Interaction to support early communication and connection

  • sensory circuits and regulation activities

  • structured play and adult-guided learning experiences

These approaches are carefully woven into the day to support children to develop communication, confidence and readiness for learning within a safe and predictable environment.
